Homeschool Sewing Classes for Kids

Your child will learn how to use a professional sewing machine, read a sewing pattern, and create their own clothes!

In our on-going class each child gets to move at their own pace with peers in their age group while building life long skills in sewing. Ages 8-13

Sewing Classes for Kids
  • They have never sewn in their life. The curriculum starts from step one! No need to have any prior knowledge.

  • They have sewn a few times (maybe at camp) but don’t know how to use a pattern yet. In this class each child will move at their own pace, so while it’s important they complete each project to practice and learn each skill… they can do so quickly if they have more confidence.

  • A current sewist looking for more guidance. They can do a straight stitch and have made all kinds of little projects. But you know they’re missing out on more advanced stuff because you haven’t learned the ins and outs of the machine or proper sewing terminology.

This class is perfect for your child if…

What’s included in the class?

  • A dedicated sewing machine for class. Their own workstation and sewing machine so they can build independence as they grow, while having hands on guidance close by.

  • All fabric, thread, zippers, buttons, yarn etc. This is the big one! We wanted to make it as easy as possible for the parents. So we have decided to include fabric and all accessories (notions). This is a huge value as local craft stores can be expensive. We are buying bulk to keep the cost down for all of us. (Each project $15-$50)

  • All the tools needed to learn and create hundreds of projects. Rulers, seam allowance guides, 4 kinds of scissors, pins, clips, taylors chalk, seam ripper, iron, you name it!

  • Sewing Patterns and Instructions. We have a huge library of sewing patterns your child can work from. Each pattern is designed specifically to be beginner friendly and based on requests from students. They usually use about 1-2 patterns a month. ($20 value per pattern).

  • Dress Forms to explore fashion technique. Each class starts with a short group activity to get creativity flowing. We use our dress forms (mannequins) to learn about different clothing elements and their terminology.

  • A list of sewing machine recommendations. When youre ready to purchase your own sewing machine we provide recommended sewing machines for all price ranges, from hobby to professional (online options or in person)

  • Designated Storage Space for each student. Students can leave their binder/patterns and half finished projects at the studio in their cubby, so nothing gets left at home accidently!

Sewing Classes

“My goal is to teach all the students two things: How to use a sewing machine and how to read a sewing pattern.”

This gives them the freedom to choose any project they want in the future. They can take this skill into any stage of life and once you have the basics - you can go in any direction!

How to Sign Up!

We onboard all new students at the start of the month.

Step One:

If they have never been to the studio…choose your first day of sewing class from the drop down below and click submit. (Make note! This will be your first day of class)

If you’re student has attended our Summer Camp OR our weekly class sign up on this page. (they have already learned the basics!)

Step Two:

Officially register for your class of choice by clicking “Enroll” next to the day you are choosing to attend and fill out out the student info! We do require a card on file to register, but you will not be charged if you choose “charter funds” as your payment method while registering.

Step Three:

If paying with Charter Funds make sure you request a Purchase Order or Enrichment Certificate from your charter school at the same time as registering! That way we receive it before your first class.

  • No, everything is provided! Sewing machine, thread, fabric, zippers, elastic and all tools are ready for your student to use

  • This is an ongoing class. Each class is 1.5 hours (90 mins).

  • Fabric to Fashion Sewing School provides a dedicated sewing machine for use at the studio. When you’re ready to buy your own sewing machine, we can provide a list of recommendations so you don’t lose your mind down the amazon rabbit hole choosing a machine out of hundreds :)

  • Absolutely. Sewing is a learned skill. It can be as easy as they want it to be or as hard as they want it to be! We start with baby steps to make them comfortable with everything. Then they can choose at what pace they prefer to work and what level projects they want to explore.

  • All new students, regardless of ability level, start by taking the same 4 classes (or one month). We do this to make sure all of our students learn strong fundamentals so they don't have to backtrack later. They almost always learn a few new skills during the first 4 classes as we cover a lot! Our instructors are quick to recommend students for more advanced projects as they progress through our curriculum.

  • If you are a brand new student you will start at the beginning of the month with other new students. We do this to make sure you new student learns all the proper safety and feels confident using the sewing machine. Scroll up the page to find all our new student start dates on a calendar.

Once your registered, the class goes month to month. To cancel, notify us by the 20th the month before you want to withdrawal.

  • Unfortunately, we cannot bring outside machines into class for a variety of reason. There are two types of sewing machines: computerized and mechanical. Our curriculum is designed with a computerized machine in mind. Each machine has a slightly different method for techniques such as buttonholes or backstitching. We teach our students on computerized sewing machines which we think is easiest for beginners. Ages 8-9 are a bit more hesitant about trying out their skills on their home machine if its different, but usually by age 10 they start to understand all sewing machines work similarly!
Also, if you've had a machine for over a year or its a hand me down it often needs to be serviced (just like a car sitting around). We can recommend a local spot if you wish to service your machine :)

  • Tuition is due by the 1st of each month. All accounts that sign up online are automatically set up for e-payment and you are authorizing Fabric to Fashion Sewing School to use the account information for all of your account billing.  If your card cannot be run and is not updated by the 10th of the month, a $10 late fee will be charged and enforced on all accounts past due.  Late notices will be sent via email. Tuition is not pro-rated for absences or studio closures.  Some months have extra classes and some have less. We keep the rate consistent.
December is the one exception. That is pro-rated for holiday closure. We do not pro-rate for Spring Break as we use those funds for the end of the year fashion show instead of charging extra fees! Students are encouraged to attend make up classes for their absences.

  • After you are enrolled in a class, you will be able to use the Parent Portal. You will create a Parent Portal account by entering the email address and portal password that you provided at registration time. If it is your first time visiting your portal and do not have or do not remember your password, click Forgot your password or need to get started? A password will be sent to the email address you have on file with us. Use that to log in to your account. From there you can change your password–just make sure it has a minimum of 5 characters.

  • As sewing is a complicated skill to learn we want to make sure the students stay focused. When parents/guardians are present, children tend to be more distracted. You are welcome to check in on your child, but we encourage the students to take the class independently. We also don't have any seating for parents to hang out at our current location.

A Word From the Owner:

I always wanted to learn how to make my own clothes. I bought a bunch of books and fabric and then… I quit twice. It always got too confusing!

It was frustrating starting out alone. Thankfully I found the right resources to get me on track and began to teach myself bit by bit. Then eventually taking college classes in fashion design, pattern making, and alterations to expand on my knowledge.

I started this class because I believe “creating something out of nothing” is one of the most valuable skills you can have. It isn’t always easy, but I promise you will feel like a champion once you complete your first few projects. Sewing teaches you grit, patience, and the reward of finishing something that’s all yours! Easily the most rewarding journey.
